Traumatic and burn scars develop when the skin sustains significant injury, whether from accidents, burns, or severe wounds. These scars often present both physical and emotional challenges, sometimes serving as lasting reminders of difficult experiences. Proper management can help improve both function and appearance, reducing discomfort and restoring mobility in affected areas.

Traumatic and Burn Scars

comprehensive scar management

How they look and feel

Each traumatic and burn scar heals uniquely, influenced by the severity of the injury and individual healing responses. These scars may appear:
+ Thick, raised, rope-like texture,
hypertrophic or keloid scars
+ Contour deformities,
altering the natural shape of the affected area
+ Uneven, pitted appearance with irregular borders,
often resulting from deep wounds
+ Tightness and restricted movement with contracted cords or strands,
contracture scars, commonly seen in burns
+ Web-like or cobblestone-like surface irregularities,
particularly in burn scars
+ Color variations ranging from all shades of red to hypopigmented (white) or hyperpigmented,
darker than surrounding skin
+ Sensitivity, itching, or discomfort,
sometimes associated with neuropathic pain, hypersensitivity, and heat intolerance
Living with traumatic or burn scars can present unique physical, functional and emotional challenges. Understanding the characteristics of your scar is the first step toward addressing discomfort, restoring movement, and improving its appearance. Since every scar responds differently, a personalised assessment is key to determining the most effective treatment approach.

*All medical procedures carry inherent risks and potential complications. A thorough consultation and clinical assessment are required to determine suitability for treatment. Individual outcomes may vary.

Our Treatment Approach

Effective management of traumatic and burn scars requires a multimodal, individualized approach that addresses both function and appearance. Treatment may include topical medications to support healing and symptom relief, as well as silicone and pressure therapy to modulate scar formation—all of which are available at our clinic. Laser-based therapies, including ablative, non-ablative, fractional, and non-fractional modalities, can improve skin texture, reduce tightness, and address pigmentation irregularities. Laser-facilitated drug delivery enhances the penetration of therapeutic agents, while intralesional injections can help soften and regulate scar tissue.

Empowering scar recovery

For scars that cause restricted mobility or discomfort, treatment may involve deep tissue scar release and occupational therapy to improve flexibility and function. In select cases, surgical intervention may be considered to release contractures, restore movement, or refine the appearance of complex scars.

Each treatment plan is tailored to the individual's needs, ensuring a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to optimising both the functionality and aesthetics of traumatic and burn scars.

*All procedures carry risks, and individual responses to treatment can vary. While we use evidence-based techniques to significantly improve the appearance and texture of scars, it is important to understand that some degree of scarring will always remain, and complete scar removal is not possible.
