Keloid scars are raised scars that grow beyond the boundaries of the original injury or wound. These distinctive scars can appear following even minor skin damage, affecting people of all ages and potentially causing both physical and emotional concerns.

How they look and feel

Keloid scars have unique characteristics that set them apart from other scar types:
+ Growth beyond the original injury site
+ Colour varying from pink to purple or brown
+ Raised, thick, and often dome-shaped appearance
+ Continued growth over time
+ Smooth, shiny surface texture
+ Possible tenderness, itching, or discomfort
Keloids most commonly develop on the chest, shoulders, earlobes, and upper arms, though they can form on various other areas of the body. Each person's experience with keloid scarring is unique and influenced by a range of factors, including ethnicity, skin type, mechanism of injury, body location, individual healing responses, and other genetic, local, and systemic influences.

Steady improvements reflect the gradual process of healing. The complex nature of keloids serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between persistence and patience in medical treatment and research.

*All medical procedures carry inherent risks and potential complications. A thorough consultation and clinical assessment are required to determine suitability for treatment. Individual outcomes may vary.

Our Treatment Approach

Keloids are a distinct type of scarring and, in fact, belong to the category of benign tumors. Their complex nature requires careful evaluation by a specialised doctor to assess individual scar risk factors and determine the most appropriate treatment strategy.

Empowering scar recovery

Given the high risk of recurrence, treatment is always multimodal, combining different approaches for the best possible outcome. Depending on the individual case, options may include topical medications, pressure therapy, laser resurfacing, intralesional steroid or anti-mitotic drug (such as 5-FU) injections, surgery, and, in select cases, radiotherapy.

*All procedures carry risks, and individual responses to treatment can vary. While we use evidence-based techniques to significantly improve the appearance and texture of scars, it is important to understand that some degree of scarring will always remain, and complete scar removal is not possible.
